The Harlot

There is a connection between Zechariah's vision and John's vision in the Book of Revelation:

Zechariah 5:5-11

Woman sitting on a basket

Emphasis on commerce (basket for measuring grain)

Woman's name is wickedness

Focus on false worship (a temple is built for the woman)

Woman is taken to Babylon

If we look at the overall context within which this passage occurs, we see that it is among of a series of visions given to Zechariah. In each of the visions, Zechariah is shown various phenomena while a heavenly messenger interprets (Zec. 1:9,19; 2:3; 3:1; 4:1,13; 5:3; 5:5-11).

When we consider the visions, they include elements which are non-literal but represent spiritual or physical truths. For example: the colored horses walking throughout the earth (Zec. 1:8-8), the four horns and four craftsmen (Zec. 1:18-21), the stone with seven eyes (Zec. 3:9), the lampstand and olive trees (Zec. 4:2-7,11-14), the flying scroll (Zec. 5:2). In several cases, when Zechariah asks for further explanation, the angel provides an interpretation of the meaning of the symbols which Zechariah has seen in the vision.

The two winged women who carry the basket as well as the woman within the basket are symbols rather than literal beings such as demons in feminine form. Nowhere else does Scripture record angelic beings, elect or fallen, appearing in feminine form.

The interpretation provided by the angel who is guiding Zechariah during the sequence of visions, concerning the woman in the basket, he says, "This is wickedness!". The angel emphasizes what the woman represents. The two women carrying the basket have, "wings like the wings of a stork". Notice that they did not have stork's wings, but wings like a stork. Key words "like," "as," and "resembling" are often indicators that what is being communicated is not literal, but symbolizes something else which is.

The reference to wings like that of a stork is an intentional reference to an unclean bird (Lev. 11:19; Deu. 14:18). We find unclean birds representing evil or demonic influence in other passages (Mat. 13:4,19; Rev. 18:2). The winged women and the woman carried in the basket represent evil within the vision.

Dark spiritual forces are behind evil which manifests in the physical realm and that fallen angels or demons indirectly serve God's purposes (e.g., 1K. 22:21-22; Rev. 16:13), we wouldn't be surprised to find them involved in the transfer of wickedness depicted in the vision. The figures in the vision are figures which represent a greater spiritual reality which is partially explained to Zechariah. We do not expect a literal woman in a literal basket carried by feminine figures (angelic or otherwise) with wings like storks flying to Shinar. Their participation in the vision is to symbolize the evil which will be transferred.

The woman in the basket is associated with another symbol located in the land of Shinar: Babylon the Whore of Revelation 17 and 18.

Revelation 17 & 18

Woman sitting on the beast, seven mountains, and many waters (Rev. 17:3, 9, 15)

Emphasis on commerce

Woman's name is Babylon the Great, Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth

Focus on false worship (Rev 17:5)

Woman is called Babylon

Babylon, the literal city, on the banks of the Euphrates River will be rebuilt to become a global hub for world trade.

And the LORD answered me, and said, write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. (Hab. 2:2-3)

Now consider the identity of the Harlot that John is shown in Revelation 17. The woman which John sees riding the Beast of seven heads and ten horns is called a harlot, indicating certain practices and priorities which stand opposed to God. She is not just a harlot, but is said to be the mother of harlots and of abominations of the earth (Rev.17). She has a role in abominations and harlotry which God hates.

Certain practices of the Israelites were prohibited and identified by God as abominations (Lev. 7:18; Deu. 18:9-12). Many of these practices (e.g., homosexuality, Lev. 18:22) were abominations in advance of Babylon of Nebuchadnezzar’s day.

The Whore is mother of the abominations of the earth. The harlot is confirmed in her ride upon the seven-headed beast (Rev. 17:3) who is empowered by the seven-headed dragon (Rev. 12:3) which is Satan exercising authority over all the kingdoms of history (Luke 4:5-6).

Roman Catholicism is identified as the Whore. The Vatican calls itself the "mother" church.

Revelation 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Research the "ecumenical movement" and you will find that the Vatican is now gathering the mainstream Protestant churches, otherwise known as the harlots.

Revelation 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH

Harlotry describes spiritual idolatry: forsaking the One True God:

Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.  (Ex. 34:12-17)

And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. (Deu. 31:16)

And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.  (Lev. 20:4-5)

But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood. Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?  (Isa. 57:3-5)

But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was. And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so. Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them, And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them. My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord God. Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter, That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them? And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast polluted in thy blood. And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord God;) That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street. Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms. Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.  (Eze. 16:15-26)

As the mother of Harlots, her priorities and intent distract those she influences away from a right recognition of God and suggests that they turn their attention to things other than the one true God.

The figure of harlotry is selfish preoccupation with worldly gain. Covetousness, idolatry and licentiousness was the besetting sin of Tyre (Eph. 5:5; Col 3:5).  Harlotry operates on the principle of “do anything for worldly gain” (Isa. 23:16-18).

The Whore sits on many waters (Rev. 17:1). The many waters are “peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.” The woman is also "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." (Rev. 17:18).

The Vatican Catholic Church is supported by, influencing and controlling a global community — including diverse nations spanning separate geographic regions much like Nineveh: “Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.” (Nah. 3:4).

The Catholic Church's global influence is also seen in her guilt: "And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth."  (Rev. 18:24)

And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. (Rev. 17:6).

Ecumenical liberalism places unity and relationship above doctrinal Truth found in the King James Bible. It is evolving into a one-world religion. The global system of unified worship is the source from which the False Prophet arises: "And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon." (Rev. 13:11).

The religious state of the end-time is distinguished by two phases: Phase One: ecumenical globalism is pervasive. Phase Two: the Antichrist (Pope John Paul II) is worshiped only.

Scripture reveals that when Jesus comes, the function of both priest and king will be united as predicted by Zechariah:

Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest; and speak unto him, saying, thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. (Zech. 6:11-13)
