What Does The Bible Say About The Practice Of Yoga?

There is nothing called "yoga" without involving philosophy or spiritual beliefs. Yoga is not as simple as physical exercises that are good for your physical health. Anyone who participates in yoga has convinced themselves the philosophy of yoga is helpful and the correct practice.

What is the philosophy or the spiritual belief system that is behind yoga?

Yoga is based on the belief that man and “god” are one. This “god” is the Hindu infinite impersonal Brahman who is not the true God of the King James Bible.

Yoga originated in the belief system of pantheism (Greek pan=all, theos=god) which says that everything is an impersonal “god”. Pantheism believes that the universe or the nature is a synonym of god. Pantheism is paganism; belief in a false concept of God.

The person who practices yoga consciously or unconsciously believes that he can change things in his spiritual and physical health by discovering his inner self. They believe that all the answers are within. This is self-worship and a false philosophy.

They practice self-control. They have not received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

The goal of the biblical sanctification is total surrender to God making us dependent on God for all aspects of our lives. The pantheistic self-discipline (including yoga) seeks to live independent of God's control in our life. It is a self-controlled life.

The sinful flesh seeks control: it refuses God. “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.” (Romans 1:21-23)

Yoga teaches you to focus and worship yourself instead of the true God. This fleshly philosophy pleases the sinful man. The New Age movement seeks to replace Biblical truth with vain human philosophies.

What does the King James Bible say?

Scripture declares of God’s thoughts.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.  Isaiah 55:8-9

We are also told to have the “same mind one toward another” which means essentially that we must develop and maintain the mind of Christ - God’s thoughts. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:". Philippians 2:5

We are to:

Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Romans 12:16

Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; Philippians 1:27

If our thoughts are contrary to God’s, then we must exchange our thinking with God’s Thinking. This is done by: "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" 2 Corinthians 10:5

We are to search and study the Scriptures, but for that to be effective, we also need to meditate on the Word of God - the King James Bible:

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Joshua 1:8

One of Satan's goals is to divide and fragment the thinking of believers. Satan tries to get God’s people confused as to who they are and why they are here.

Satan tries to get believers preoccupied or distracted with other things. He tries to get believers to live independently, to think like the world thinks, to think like the natural man thinks in the futility of his mind (Eph. 4:17-18).

The best way to thwart Satan's plan and not fall in to Satan's traps is to meditate on God's Word - the King James Bible day and night and make the decision not to be involved in anything that contradicts the Word of God.
